When I saw a call out from Bec Williams Designs looking for collaboration partners for her beautiful collection of fabrics “Oceania”, I eagerly put my hand up to be considered. To my delight, she said yes! A mermaid was the natural choice to help showcase the beautiful fabric that is a whimsical celebration of the flora and fauna of oceanic life.
Originally, I thought that I would like to use the sea grass inspired fabric to make flutter sleeves for her bralette, but after a little experimentation, I realised that a halter would be a perfect choice. I love the idea that she has fashioned the sea grass into a fashionable garment for herself! After a half-hearted look for my bias tape making machine, I gave up and made the bias tape in the old fashioned way (note to self –> tidy craft room!).
I hunted through my bits and pieces that I have collected over the years, and thought that this beautiful sequinned edging that I acquired in Indonesia would add a special touch.
After all the sewing was completed, I thought that she was almost ready…. but missing something. I decided that she might like a special necklace, perhaps it was a keepsake that she found one day on the bottom of the ocean? Luckily in the past I have dabbled in some jewellery making, and so I whipped her up a simple necklace. I think jewellery making is a a complimentary skill to go with doll making, and it’s totally not as complicated as you may think! I hope that I can inspire you to give it a try!
This was such a fun collaboration to work on, and I am so happy that Bec gave me the opportunity to work with her! This was so much fun to do, and I will be on the lookout for further opportunities for collaboration in the future! I can’t wait to see the beautiful professional images that Bec will kindly be sharing with me!
